A while back I wrote an article about the immigration issue in this country and how the number of deportations under the Obama administration has significantly increased. Those of us who are against the tactics used to round up mass numbers of people, detain, and then deport them are not surprised that the system is extremely flawed. Now, a recent case of a young innocent teen deported to Columbia will hopefully draw more attention to this 21st century witch hunt.
During the fall of 2010, 14 year old Jakadrien Turner, an African American girl living in Dallas, ran away from her home after struggling with the loss of her grandfather and recent divorce of her parents. Young Jakadrien was quickly picked up by authorities for minor theft charges and when she gave a false name, police found the name belonged to an illegal Columbian woman with warrants for her arrest. Jakadrien was then transferred to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE). ICE took her fingerprints but never confirmed the young girl’s identity. Instead, their logical solution was to deport her to Columbia, where she’s been ever since.
However the facts that Jakadrien is black, not a foreign immigrant, and does not speak Spanish, are falling on deaf ears in Columbia, where she’s currently being held in a detention center. Her grandmother, after many months of searching online, located Jakadrien,to her astonishment, in Columbia. Now she wants Jakadrien returned but Columbian authorities are refusing to return the teen until everything is sorted out. Also, ICE spokesman says her identity must be confirmed before she’s allowed to return home.
This episode illustrates the epitome of why current immigration policies are failing in America. ICE officials do not care to distinguish between illegal immigrants who are true criminals, illegal immigrants just trying to support their kids, and young black teens, before they gather them up as if all one category and send them away. ICE officials don’t care. They have a quota to fill (400,000 deportations per year) and nothing, even 14 year old American citizens, will escape their justice.
